Getting the vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed to support your postpartum recovery can be difficult to achieve through diet alone. “A postnatal vitamin is a great tool to aid you in reaching these goals,” said Sarah Jordan, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. Dr. Jordan recommends taking a postnatal vitamin for at least six months postpartum and until your baby has weaned off breastmilk. When deciding which brand is right for you, there are some key ingredients to look for. According to Dr. Jordan, folate is a very important component. She also recommends that postpartum moms try and get at least 27 milligrams of iron daily. “Iron in postnatal vitamins can prevent anemia and help with postpartum recovery,” she said.
