If you’re a parent to a baby or a toddler, it’s helpful to have a first aid kid on-hand for minor injuries and common illnesses. Robert Quillin, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician and medical director at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas, recommended storing a baby’s first aid kit in the nursery. You likely won’t have to worry about anything expiring as most items have an extended shelf life. “An infant is likely to outgrow the need for the items before the over-the-counter medications expire,” said Dr. Quillin. As your child grows, you’ll want to update your kit. "The first aid kit changes as the child goes through stages of development and activity,” explained Dr. Quillin. "A first aid kit for a newborn will not be the same as a first aid kit for an older child.” Some must-have items include a variety of bandage sizes, antibiotic ointment, acetaminophen and antihistamine.
