Dressing a Baby for Comfortable, Safe Sleep

Comfort and safety are key when dressing your baby for sleep, though many factors can influence how well a baby sleeps. “Sleep changes dramatically as an infant opens their eyes for the first time and continues through the months of tireless exploration that lead up to their first birthday,” said Robert Quillin, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician and medical director at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas. Sleep patterns follow genetics as well as environmental cues, noted Dr. Quillin. When choosing sleep clothing, lightweight cotton onesies, sleep sacks and wearable blankets are the safest options. Dr. Quillin recommends prepping any brand-new clothes. “Pre-washing any infant clothing will prevent skin irritation,” he said. He also recommends removing stiff clothing tags to enhance comfort and promote more satisfying sleep.
