COVID-19 Vaccination in Early Pregnancy

Parents

A new study found that COVID vaccination in early pregnancy did not cause any increase in birth defects in the babies of people who took the vaccine. Both the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend the COVID vaccine for pregnant people. “COVID-19 infection can be associated with significant maternal and fetal risks during pregnancy, which can be associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes,” said Anushka Chelliah, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. For pregnant people, COVID infections are associated with severe illness, a high risk of hospitalization, ICU admission, respiratory complications, blood clots and an elevated risk of preeclampsia, said Dr. Chelliah. “From a fetal and neonatal perspective, there is a higher risk of placental insufficiency resulting in growth restriction, stillbirth, risk of preterm birth and neonatal infection,” she added.
